Reverse your mouse’s scroll direction, not your trackpad’s

macOS has one Natural scrolling setting for your mouse and trackpad together. Meowse reverses only the scroll wheel, so the trackpad can scroll naturally while the mouse scrolls the traditional way.

One setting for two devices

With Natural scrolling on, content follows your fingers, as on an iPhone. That feels right on a trackpad, but many people expect a mouse wheel to work the other way: roll down, move down the page.

System Settings shows Natural scrolling under both Mouse and Trackpad, but it’s a single setting. Change it in one place and the other changes too.

Set each one separately

  1. Leave Natural scrolling on in System Settings, so the trackpad scrolls naturally.
  2. Install Meowse. Reverse Direction is on from the start, so the wheel scrolls the traditional way right away.
  3. Prefer it the other way round? Turn Natural scrolling off in System Settings and keep Reverse Direction on: the trackpad scrolls traditionally and the mouse naturally.

Meowse changes only scroll wheel events. Trackpad and Magic Mouse scrolling pass through exactly as macOS sends them.

Options

  • Reverse vertical and Reverse horizontal are separate switches in Settings → Scrolling.
  • Reverse Direction in the menu bar menu turns both on or off at once.
  • Reversing works with smooth scrolling on or off, and still applies while you hold the key that skips smoothing.

Questions

Does this change how my trackpad scrolls?

No. Meowse reverses only scroll wheel input. Your trackpad and Magic Mouse keep following the Natural scrolling setting in System Settings.

Can I reverse only horizontal scrolling?

Yes. Vertical and horizontal are separate switches in Settings → Scrolling.

Do I need smooth scrolling on to reverse direction?

No. Turn off Smooth Scrolling in the Meowse menu and it only reverses the wheel.
